In 1974, Big Cypress was established along with Big Thicket National Preserve (TX) as the very first National Preserves in the United States. 729,000 acres (that's larger than the state of Rhose Island!) of cypress swamps, marl prairies, pinelands, hardwood hammocks and estuaries border the Everglades National Park and provide a home to over 190 bird species, the river otter, black bear, bobcat, coyote, Florida panters and of course - alligators - AND loads of slitering snakes!
